Uutta alulle - Starting new works

The first sketch looks like Kate Winslet.

I wanted to have a new work started before St. Kerkyra and Evgenia would be ready. Last spring I was drawing some sketches of St Mary of Egypt, standing and with her lion friend, but somehow it did not feel right. I think I must do a few more potrait size icons, to feel sure of the techique.

An old copy of Ikonimaalari had an article about the old belivers in Carelia with a lovely picture of Archangel Gabriel from the monastey of Megri, Ilomantsi, Finland. I like the fresh turquoise background, Gabriels pink robe and slightly mad expression. His shoulders are touchingly narrow like a young boys´ and the robe is held together with a pretty brooch.

Someone has been conservating the icon rather clumsily, I will have to guess how the line of the left cheek goes and invent a few curls on the left shoulder. The ribbon that belongs to the meticulous hairdo is missing, so I´ll have to add it to my drawing. Antti sugested I might as well do a Archangel Michael too, once I start. This means I will do all the painting as two mirror images! This will be great fun...

Pari uutta värikerrosta - A few new layers of color

Seuraavassa kuvasarja kasvojen vaalennuskerroksista. Seuraavan ikonin kohdalla lupaan järjestää "vakioidun" kuvauspaikan.

The following pictures show the layers that add light to the face. Unfortunately the pictures are all taken in different lighting conditions, so the colors are not consistent. For my next project I promise to use a fixed place for photographing...

Jevgenian kasvoissa on pelkkä sankir - okraa ja norsunluunmustaa.
Evgenia´s face with sankir - yellow ochre and ivory black.

"Appelsiiniväri", okraa ja sinoperia, tekee kasvot jotenkin Modigliani -henkiseksi.
"Orange", yellow ochre and cinnabar makes the face look like a Modigliani portrait.

Ensimmäinen valokerros, appelsiiniväriin on lisätty titaanivalkoista.
First layer of light, orange-color with titanium withe.

Valokerrosten väillin tulee okra lasuuri. Valoväriin on lisätty edelleen valkoista.
There is a glaze of yellow ochre between the light layers. More withe has been added in the light color.

Lämpöväri, sinoperi lasuuri, poskissa, otsassa, alahuulessa ja oikealla ohimolla.
Warmth, a glaze of cinnabar on the cheeks, lower lip and right temple.

Ei enää kovin kesken - ehkä.
Not much left to do to the face - maybe.

Kerkira ja appelsiinväri. Kerkyra with orange layer.

1. valokerros. 1st layer of light.

Useita valokerroksia, välissään okra lasuuri, lämpöväri. Ja isommat korvannipukat.
Several layers of light with glaze of yellow ochre between, warmth. And bigger ear lobes.

Olen tyytyväinen hänen huuliinsa.
I am quite happy with her lips.

Glaukoniittia! Glaukonite!

Yllä olevien linkkien kuvat mineraaleista paljastivat kenties ilmiön syyn: glaukoniittirae on pieni piikkinen pallo, okra taas näyttää luonnon pesusieneltä.

The virginmartyrs got color on their frames. The mixture was made of glauconite, yellow ochre, titanium withe and some ultramarine. I ground the mix and Antti sprinkled pigments over the grindstone as if he was a chef at a tv show: some more of this and a pinch of that. The final colour was a pleasant greyish green, but when it dried the surface felt very sandy.

"To grind glauconite" is a phrase I have heard several times over the last year, and now I had the chance to try it. It is something totally different from messing with yellow ochre, an other mineral that has to be ground before painting with! Ochre spreads wildly ower the stone slab, and most of the work is scraping it together with a palette knife in order to keep it on the slab in the first place. The glauconite powder behaves differently: it gathers nicely in the middle of the stone and it is easy to spred it out again with the glass muller. How very pleasant! Compared to this it is a minor point that glauconite has to be ground for quite a wihle before the sandy rasping sound changes to a quiet rustle. I guess the reason for this can maybe be seen, if you look at the links to the minerals above. A granule of glauconite is like a thorny little ball, whereas ochre looks like a sponge.

The nice thing with gold is that it´s easy to remove the paint that goes ower the line.

PS. Käytän tietoisesti ristiin eri kirjoitusasuja (Kerkira - Kerkyra, Eugenia - Evgenia - Jevgenia), jotta mm. hakukoneella olisi helpompi löytää tänne.

I have been painting saint Kerkyra and saint Eugenia for quite a while now. Last spring I got color on the clothes, sankir on the faces and a blue undercolor for Kerkiras veil. During summer I had a long, much too long brake in painting as the summercourse I wanted to take, did not happen. Now I painted the countenance on their faces. I is a delicate moment, when one gets to meet a saint face to face.

Kerkyra sometimes looks very aristrocratic, serene and just a little fed up - but not always. Sometimes she reminds of my goddaughter Kriska, who will get the icon. I hope something of her will remain in the icon through the work.

Kerkyras pink robe is soo bright. I guess I have to find the color for the frame before I change it. The white veil should become still whiter and something, I do not know what, has to be done to the cross. Her undergarment will have decorations, ribbons and pearls - she is after all a kings daughter. Strangely enough, both girls have the right cheek much rounder than the left. Eugenia looks like she had toothache. I got to fix that too, unless it dissappears when I start adding light to the faces.

I like Evgenia more and more every day. First I liked Kerkyra better, it was fun to draw her pearls and finery. Evgenia felt more like a stranger to me, a mainstream saint. When I yesterday painted her features, and a calm and pleasing face suddenly looked back at me, my sympathies grew. Today I found a new article about her. Although calling her a transgender saint might be a anacronism and too modern a reading, it does give her character more depth. At least she was a woman who knew what she wanted. It was also new to me that she served as a igumen.

PS. I purposely spell the names in several ways (Kerkira - Kerkyra, Evgenia - Eugenia - Jevgenia) in order to give the search engines a better chance to find here.
