Kultausmixtion kuivumassa - Drying the mixtion for gilding
Löysin runsaasti vaihtelevan tasoisia kuvia Hermannin ikoneista. Harmillisen moni näytti Serafim Sarovilaiselta. Eihän niin voi maalata... Herman on Herman ja Serafim on Serafim!
Vaatevaalennoksessa oli häikkää ja se piti pestä.
Something went wrong with the robe, and I had to wash it.

Pyhittäjä-isä Herman,
pohjoisten erämaitten kilvoittelija
ja koko maailman armollinen

ortodoksisen uskon opettaja ja hurskauden esikuva
Alaskan kerskaus ja Amerikan maan ilo,
rukoile Kristusta Jumalaa pelastamaan meidän
sielumme!

Kuusisaari - Spruce island
I intended to paint St Tryphon for my friend. St Tryphon worked as a shepherd of geese, and I wanted a plain board for having enough space for some geese. As I could not get the right kind of panel soon enough, I decided to paint something else meanwhile.
Another friend had asked for a Saint Herman of Alaska, so I dived into Internet for good icons. Pinterest has recently become the place to find lots of great iconography. It is also possible to search Pinterest with Cyrillic or Greek letters. St. Herman seems to be popular enough, but there are unfortunately many icons of him around, where he looks more like St. Seraphim of Sarov... That´s not the way to paint, Seraphim is Seraphim and Herman is Herman!
Luckily, I do have a nice model for St. Herman at our local church. This is the first icon I paint while actually humming the saints troparion! Father Herman felt so close and familiar. In sudden inspiration I had drawn a him with a scroll in his hand and Spruce Island behind him. First I drew only little scerries in the background, but after googling a bit, I realized what Spruce Island must look like. I also found a few nice documentaries about St Herman on Youtube. Here you have one.

I started working on this icon in mid December - I would not remember this unless I had taken a picture of the icon with masking film and mixtion dated 13th of December. This is quite clever - now I know for sure when I can put the olifa! I tried to find more pictures from the process of the working on St Herman for this post, but most of the early ones are taken during darkest winter and shaken, out of focus or otherwise so gray, I refuse to bore you with them.
Voihan kuusikon maalaamisen vaikeus! Tässä lopulliset, korkeat kalliorannat.
Oh, the difficulty of painting spruce! Here with the final version of the cliffs.
