Anhelit laudasill - Angels on board

Hei, olen taas matkalla!

Wow! I´m on the road again! I thought next painting lesson would consist of quiet drawing and some more drawing, and that I should think about ordering new boards. I had forgotten that I had made an ok drawing of Gabriel last week, and that I had two boards of the right size waiting.

All I had to do was make a mirror image of the drawing, and in both drawings correct the small flaws wich became discernible in the mirrored one. This is a most peculiar phenomenon: watch your drawing through a mirror and all the weak points in the composition will become evident. I had heard about this method ages ago, but never tried it. I should have tried it earlier!

Megrin Gavrila - Gabriel of Megri

Harvoinpa suomalainen ikonimaalari pääsee tutustumaan maalattavan ikonin esikuvaan.

Museo on kaikin puolin suositeltava vierailukohde, perusnäyttely on hyvin rakennettu rautaisannos karjalatietoutta. Saimme oikein riistäytyä sen parista, siellä olisi voinut viettää koko päivän. Jos vierailet Joensuussa, älä jätä tätä väliin!

Siirryimme autolla museon varastolle kaupungin ulkopuolelle.

Gabriel, Gabriel, keitä he olivat, he, jotka sinun edessäsi hiljentyivät? Mitä he toivoivat, mitä he pelkäsivät? Mitä he rukoilivat? Isä meidän, Herra armahda, osan heidän rukouksistaan tunnenkin. He sytyttivät tuohuksen, kuten minäkin. He hankkivat sinun ikonisi luostariinsa, asiantuntijat arvelevat että tulet Syvärin luostarin maalamosta?

The vedges are lost.

------

I got interested in the icons from Megri monastery when I read an article in the finnish iconography magazine Ikonimaalari. The idea of a monastery in the wilderness was fascinating. The pictures of the buildings woke up my "inner ethnographer".  I could not get the image of the brightly coloured angel with his wise and gentle smile out of my mind. I am so happy I can start painting him now!

It is not very common for a finnish iconographer to be able to see the real icon to work from - unless you happen to take a course at New Valamo lay academy and happen to paint the Mother of God of Konevits or Mother of God of Valaam. In that case you can always drop in to the church and medtiate in front of the actual icon. Othervise you have to find prints, photos, books and webpages to give the information you need. The Archangel Gabriel of Megri monastery belongs to the Pohjois-Karjala museum (North Carelia museum). A lucky coincidence was all I needed to be able to go and see it. In the end of january I spent a few days as a volunteer at New Valamo monastery, and on my way back home I could drive to Joensuu.

On the 24th of january, 2012, I and two other volunteers, Tuuli and Henry arrived at Carelicum, a museum and culture centre in Joensuu. Head of collections of the museum, Auli Patjas kindly recieved us and took us first to have a look at the three Mother of Gods from Megri, wich are exhibited at the museum. They are nice-looking icons with forest green backgrounds, typical for the region and period. The main exhibit at the museum is very impresive and gives a good idea of Karelian history and culture. Don´t miss it if you happen to be in Joensuu!

Together we took the car to the collection storage, wich is situated outside town. The conservator had picked out the icon for us, a big archival box made of acid-free cardbord was waiting. This made me smile, it was like a familar ritual. I have worked in museums and photoarchives, and visited many collection storages when I was making a reconstruction of a Carelian dress. I have seen this kind of boxes before. Auli put on a pair of cotton gloves - it is also part of the scene - and carefully opened the box and moved aside the thin wrapping paper.

We where met by a pair of amber eyes, with a look dating back 200 years. The Archangel was wearing a pale green sticharion and a rose colored cloak fastened with a brooch. The background was pale turquoise. He was something completely different from the three slightly rural Mother of Gods.

Gabriel, Gabriel, who were they, who prayed in front of you? What were their hopes and fears? What did they ask in their prayers? Our Father... Lord have mercy... some of it I do know. They lit a thin wax candle, just like I do. They had bought your icon, maybe from the monastery of Svir, as the experts think? Did they have a Archangel Michael too, like a twin brother, in rose sticharion and green cloak?

When I stepped closer I noticed a good fragnance coming from the icon. I have heard of icons with a holy scent, but I have never imagined I would ever get to smell it! Auli tought it was just the smell of an old object, but as a ex- museum guide I do recognise that. This was something else, like honey and herbes, holy. Only when I examined the icon closely, (oh yes, I am very nearsighted) I felt the very familiar "museum smell".

Auli gave us copies of all the papers concernig the icon. As we were leafing through them Tuuli suddenly exclaimed: look! The icon had arrived to the museum on the 24th of January 1924 - exactly 88 years ago.  The museum staff smiled at the coincidence, but we three orthodox christians felt Archangel Gabriel said "hello".
